One mistake we make when we read the Bible is looking at the actions of the people recorded in it and determine what we read to be the expressed will of God. God gave his creation free choice, often what we are seeing is our expressed will driven by selfishness and brokenness. The Bible is the story of a God of love working within a terrible mess.
The best example of this is the life and ministry of Jesus. He came to seek and save, to minister, to teach, to heal, to bring freedom. His own people killed him – a micro-picture of entire humanity’s relationship with God.
If there’s one thing that the Bible drives home over and over again is there are no heroes and what we are witnessing is the consequences of our fallen state. And yet, woven within our messes are God’s concessions and directions that are to bring us back to him; to lead us home.
